The Real Cost of a Gramophone: EXW, FOB and DDP Compared

The price on a quotation is not the price you pay — the Incoterm decides what is included. For gramophone imports from China, most first orders are quoted FOB, but EXW and DDP are increasingly offered. Here is how the three compare and what each one costs you.
1. EXW: you handle everything
Under EXW (Ex Works), the factory makes the goods available at its premises and your responsibility starts there. You arrange pickup, export clearance, ocean freight, insurance and import clearance. The unit price looks lowest, but every freight service becomes your job — usually a trade-off only large importers with their own logistics prefer.
2. FOB: the standard for first orders
FOB (Free On Board) means the factory covers inland transport and loading the goods onto the vessel; you take over for ocean freight, insurance and customs at destination. It is the most common Incoterm for gramophone imports because the split of responsibility is clear and freight forwarders quote it easily.
3. DDP: delivery to your door
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) puts nearly everything — freight, insurance, duties and import clearance — in the factory's scope, with goods delivered to your door. It simplifies the process but bundles the cost into the unit price, and some buyers prefer to control customs themselves for duty planning.
4. Comparing the true cost
To compare quotes fairly, convert every option to a landed cost: unit price plus the freight, insurance and customs you will actually pay under each Incoterm. A DDP quote that looks expensive can be cheaper than a low FOB price once you add forwarder fees at your end.
5. Choosing for your situation
First-time importers often start with FOB and use a forwarder they trust. Buyers with a reliable logistics partner can use EXW to control costs. Buyers who want a single, predictable all-in price — common for smaller volumes — prefer DDP. Ask your supplier for all three comparisons if available.
